That scary time of year is approaching soon, as evidenced by the fact that Halloween candy bags have been pushed to the front of the grocery stores since right after St. Patrick's Day.

There are towns in Washington that go all out for Halloween as part of their culture, like Selah, who shuts down all business on Main Street so that they can pass out candy to the thousands of trick or treaters on Halloween Day.

Selah is not a scary city name, but there are a few towns in Washington that could sound scary, depending on if you are spooked out enough or not.

EnumCLAW

Sounds like you might get clawed to death in this town. Or better yet, find a good bear claw pastry to snack on.

BATTLE Ground

Are you ready to fight for your life, because with a name like BATTLE GROUND, it seems like I need to be prepared to either stand guard or wave the little white flag of surrender! Thank goodness we have local police protection from any visiting vicious dragons from Canada, including the cuddly looking one who made an appearance here recently!

FORKS

Now, come on. Everybody knows there are werewolves and vampires in human form living in gorgeous Forks, Washington. I can see right past their charming and friendly smiles! I'm not going out like that.  AVOID.

Medical LAKE, Moses LAKE, Liberty LAKE, Soap LAKE

I've watched too many movies about Jason Voorhees to know that a town with a name similar to Camp Crystal LAKE is one to stay away from, lest I end up the next movie extra victim in a Friday the 13th movie!

You might slip and slide your way to doom in a place that sounds friendly but just might not be. During certain times of the year, you might even have a sign that tells you to "Go Back!"

PE ELL

The name makes me think of Superman's real name on his home planet, Krypton (KAL- EL) ...which makes me shudder and think about bald-headed Lex Luthor!

Gene Hackman made Lex Luthor terrorizing to me when I was a kid! Then again, I was only 4 years old at the time. I was very impressionable.

STARBUCK

Who knew that there was a city in Washington that bears the same name as the coffee company that started in Seattle and has taken over every airport, corner block, and even the hearts and minds of pumpkin spice lovers. I bet they spell your name wrong there, too! (If you are a Starbucks barista reading this, I kid, I kid.)

Frightening! Avoid.
