MAV3RICK SPOTLIGHT OF THE WEEK: “Take It Slow” -Conner Smith

Every week I highlight a new song that I’m liking, and want to get your thoughts to see if you think it’s a hit or a miss. Should we continue to play it on KISSIN’ 977.

This week we feature another Watershed 2023 artist, who is country through in through. Not just because Conner Smith was born and raised in Nashville. It helps. Especially since his mom worked in the country music industry and often interviewed artists. He would hang out in Mom’s office, which inspired Smith to start songwriting himself. In fact, by the age of 6, He started writing songs. At the age of 9, he was actually signed to BMI as a writer! Last time year, Conner was named one of Spotify’s Hot Country Artist to Watch, and Amazon Music’s Artist To Watch.

Now before we talk about the actual Mav3rick Spotlight of the Week, in the past few weeks here on the MSOW, we’ve played Megan Moroney’s, Tennessee Orange. Her story about falling in love with with a Tennessee football fan (Morgan Wallen), despite being raised by her father who is a diehard Georgia fan. Then there’s Morgan Wallen’s supposed answer version called, Tennessee Fan, his side of the story to Megan Moroney’s tune. Now in the middle of all this comes Conner Smith with what seems like a similar love story-line with his song (and sequel to, I Hate Alabama), Orange and White. Which I’m sure we’re gonna feature some time as the Mav3rick Spotlight of the Week. If it doesn’t became a hit beforehand.

Now 21 years old, Conner Smith has written five of the six songs from his official debut album, Didn’t Go Too Far, which features his new single, Take It Slow. Sure, in the lyrics his girl says, take it slow. But with, “I know a backroad, we can find a spot to be alone. We can sway back and forth to what's on the radio. Nothing but time, kiss me all night, and let's just take it slow”, you get the feeling it’s more like, take the long way to our destination, to a quiet place where life is slow, and make that kiss last forever. Well, I like to believe it’s that innocent. But if you watch the video below, you’ll see Conner Smith symbolically adding fuel to the the small fire they’ve got going by the pond.

As mentioned, Conner Smith is appearing at Watershed 2023 at the Gorge on August 6th, but it’s not his only gig in Washington this Summer. He’ll be at the RV Inn Style Resorts Amphitheater in Richfield on July 20th. And at the Toyota Amphitheater in Wheatland on July 21st. And if you plan on seeing him, be sure to know all of the lyrics to his songs, so you can sing along with his huge fan base who will most likely be singing louder than Smith himself.

Well, I love this song. Give Take It Slow a listen and let us know, if you think it’s a hit or a miss? You be the judge on the Mav3rick Spotlight of the Week, by Conner Smith.
